Every Valentine’s Day, my social media feed turns into an endless stream of lovey-dovey posts all trying to competitively outdo each other.
There’s Karen, posting a picture of her and her partner in matching socks, looking like they’ve just stepped out of a rom-com. The caption reads, “Love is our favorite adventure,” with a billion heart emojis. (Yes Karen, socks are soooooo adventurous, aren’t they?) I can’t help but roll my eyes so hard they might fall out.
Then comes Mike, who’s apparently decided to write a love letter to his girlfriend in the form of a 20-part spewing of photos online ending with a “I found my other half” – Does that mean you are only HALF a person? … Quite concerning!
And don’t get me started on Emily, who’s decided to share her love story via a series of quotes from poetry books I guarantee she has never read. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” she writes, which probably means she’s either in denial or it’s a one-sided relationship where she always gets her own way. Blink twice if you want to get out!
My social media feed is drowning in so much fake love syrup that I’m ready to shout “SHUT UP!” into the abyss, but then I remember, for some of these folks, this is like the Super Bowl of romance – it only happens once a year. So, I guess, in a way, it’s their special day of pretending they live in a rom-com. They’ve earned their moment to bask in the glow of heart emojis and cliché quotes, even if it’s just a 24-hour gig.
